Congratulations to the entire Foresight Linux team for releasing their version 1.3, timed to be released with GNOME 2.18.2!!!
Some of the new features are:
GNOME: This is the third Foresight Linux release with GNOME 2.18 (after 2.18.0 & 2.18.1), and contains minor fixes and improvements.
Desktop Search: With Beagle 0.2.17 and tweaked for Foresight Linux, we continue to improve the ability to search your computer.
Web browsing: We have upgraded Epiphany web browser to version 2.18.2.
First Boot Process: The outdated Firstboot mechanism has been replaced by our modified version of autoconfig from Knoppix to configure X.Org, and creating the first user is done by Firstrun. This will make it even easier for users to install Foresight.
Chat: … with Pidgin (formerly known as GAIM) updated to version 2.0.1. Pidgin supports multiple chat protocols such as Jabber, MSN, AIM, ICQ, IRC and more.
HAL: was updated to 0.5.9. HAL, the Hardware Abstraction Layer, has updates for a number of devices. This should make Foresight compatible with more peripherals.
X.Org 7.2: The new graphical server makes it easier for users by automatically installing monitors and video cards without editing configuration files.
The latest Compiz 3D window manager, installed by default on Foresight Linux
Package Manager: The Conary package manager has been updated to the latest version, 1.2.27. Conary is a full featured distributed package manager similar to RPM or dpkg, featuring the ability to install software, manage dependencies and even rollback to previously installed versions.
Important Bugfixes:
- More Digital Cameras are now supported to import (issue #143, issue #247 )
- Gtk is now localized. This means that dialogs like printing and file opening are now available in your local language.
Check out the release notes and take the time to read the newsletter!

I must say this distro looks neat. Also, nice upgrades, i wish Ubuntu had those changes implemented
Hi Og,
Just a couple of questions.
* Is this a metadistribution of some of the ‘big distros’ (Debian, RedHat, Slackware…) or is it a Linux from scratch?
* Can it be used as a live-CD.
It seems to be a nice piece of work
Best regards,
Francesc
Hi Francesc,
* You could say it is a distribution from scratch, based off rPath Linux… which is also from scratch…
* We currently have specific LiveCD versions for it which can be downloaded from the main web site. These are pretty much the same as the GNOME Live CDs (guess what? it is all Foresight but with GNOME only apps).
Cheers,
Og
The kernel version number is missing from the 1.3 release notes. What is it? Please add it to the web site someplace.
I’m stuck with Debian and generally install the gnome-desktop-environment meta package (experimental branch). It works ok for install but then doesn’t let you remove the smallest little app later – apt wants to strip all of GNOME. Weird.
By the way, I appreciate that some people use search (Beagle), but not all. Some of us need all that stuff turned off. Please don’t make it hard for us. In corporate environments search meta data can breach security – directory listings and file names are supposedly protected.
